Physical Therapy for Knee Painin Philadelphia, Trenton & Surrounding Cities

Physical therapy for knee pain is one of the best treatments out there for long-term relief.

Strive PT physical therapists are experts on the evaluation and treatment for knee pain, no matter if you’ve had it for days or years. Physical therapy for knees involves improving the mobility of the knee joint (and sometimes the ankle and hip too), improving the strength and flexibility of the lower extremity, and improving the coordination of how the muscles work together.

Common Causes of Knee Pain

Knee pain impacts about fifty percent of people at some point in their lifetime. Knee pain is from gradual, overuse injuries, trauma, or degeneration. An overuse injury, such as runner’s knee, IT band syndrome, or patellofemoral pain syndrome, happen from repetitive movements and usually weakness throughout the leg. Trauma, such as fractures, or ligament tears, happen from things like car accidents, falls, or contact sports. Ligament tears at the knee which typically happen from a fall or outside force are anterior and posterior cruciate ligament (ACL, PCL), medial or lateral collateral ligament (MCL, LCL), and meniscus tears. The most common cause of knee pain in older adults is knee osteoarthritis, where the cartilage wears completely away. Patients typically need a knee replacement for severe cases and physical therapy to restore knee function.

What Can You Do To Alleviate Your Knee Pain?

Physical therapy is the most effective treatment you can try for your knee health. Your physical therapist will help you work towards a normal range of motion, strength, and flexibility around your sore knee. PTs know that knees with good mobility, strength, and mechanics will rarely cause pain. Do not hesitate to make an appointment as soon as you discover a knee problem because you will have faster relief the earlier you seek treatment.

How A Physical Therapist Can Alleviate Knee Pain

The main goal of physical therapy exercises for knee pain is to achieve normal muscle strength, flexibility, and joint mobility. After a knee replacement or a ligament repair, you will work to restore normal mobility into bending and straightening. When the knee can move through a normal range, you will work to improve joint mobility and work on strengthening and preparing your knee for normal activities without pain.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • A physical therapy visit lasts about 40-60 minutes. The actual contents of the visit vary based on your diagnosis/need, but typically what happens is:

    1. You check in with the receptionist, make any appointments necessary, and we discuss your health insurance benefits with you.
    2. You go into the gym. You can change clothes if you need to, then begin therapy.
    3. You perform 6-8 various exercises and stretches. These can include therapeutic band exercises, light body weight exercises, or minimal weights. The stretches will promote strength, stability, improved range of motion, and pain relief.
    4. We can initiate other techniques to include manual work, taping, cupping, and dry needling as needed.
    5. The therapist makes recommendations based on your progress. These can include altering the frequency of visits, making additions/alterations to your home exercise plan, or things to do before your next visit.
  • We recommend budgeting 40-60 minutes for a typical therapy session. The only exception to this will be your first visit, which can take about 20 minutes longer due to the physical therapy evaluation your therapist will provide. We also recommend showing up about 10-15 minutes early to your first visit. This way, you can complete the paperwork before your visit time and streamline the process.

  • If we are asking you to do something that is hurting too much, let us know! Physical therapy should not be severely painful. It is not common to be so sore that patients are in pain or it affects their daily life. If this ever happens during or after an appointment, let us know and we will adapt your program.

  • During your initial evaluation, your therapist may ask you a number of questions to determine what the cause of your pain is. This can include questions about your sleep habits, activity level, and work environment. They will also ask for a medical history, and then typically ask direct questions about where and when you experience pain.
